India Invests $2.9B in 500,000-Tonne Electrolytic Aluminum Project Due 2030
According to overseas industry reports, a major Indian state-owned aluminum producer has confirmed plans for a large-scale electrolytic aluminum expansion with a total investment of 300 billion rupees (approximately 21.2 billion yuan / $2.9 billion), as announced at its 45th annual general meeting in late August 2026. The integrated project covers a new electrolytic aluminum smelter, captive power generation and supporting mine development, strengthening the company’s foothold in the global aluminum market while supporting diversification into strategic minerals including lithium and rare earths.
The core smelter expansion will be built at an existing production complex in Odisha state, with a planned annual electrolytic aluminum capacity of 500,000 tonnes. It will be supported by a 1,080 MW coal-fired captive power plant, with commercial production targeted for 2030.
Upstream Raw Material Capacity Expansion
To secure feedstock for the new smelter, the producer is simultaneously ramping up upstream alumina and bauxite capacity. In alumina refining, the fifth production line at its existing refinery is currently undergoing phased commissioning. Once fully operational, the facility’s annual alumina output will rise from 2.1 million tonnes to 3.1 million tonnes, adding 1 million tonnes of new capacity. Full stable production is on track for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2027. In bauxite mining, the company’s flagship mine delivers approximately 6.825 million tonnes of ore per year. A second mine project, with a designed annual capacity of 3.5 million tonnes, is also in the planning and design phase to secure long-term bauxite supply for the expanded alumina operations.
Advanced Smelting Technology Licensing
On the technology front, the Indian aluminum producer signed an official technology licensing agreement with a leading UAE-based aluminum company in Dubai in early September 2026. The agreement will bring the UAE firm’s proprietary DX+ Ultra electrolytic aluminum smelting technology to the 500,000-tonne Odisha expansion project, supporting efficient, low-consumption production.
Industry Impact: No Near-Term Disruption to Global Balance
Industry analysts point out that with a startup date of 2030 and a long construction cycle, the 500,000-tonne-per-year capacity addition will not change the current global supply and demand pattern of electrolytic aluminum. Its impact on global aluminum markets will only materialize in the medium to long term.
Producer Background
Founded in 1981, the Indian aluminum producer is a fully state-owned central public sector enterprise. It is one of India’s largest integrated aluminum companies, with a complete value chain covering bauxite mining, alumina refining, electrolytic aluminum smelting, power generation and downstream product manufacturing.
